City Thermoplastic Engineering has fabricated in composite and thermoplastic since 1991: packed-bed scrubbers, dust collectors, FRP and thermoplastic tanks, industrial and composite piping, electroplating lines and water and wastewater treatment plant. Acid fumes and exhaust gas

Answered with exhaust gas and air treating equipment, manufactured to the requirements stipulated by the Department of Environment.

The problem

A pickling, plating, etching or laboratory process gives off acid vapour or solvent-laden air. It reaches the roof vent untreated, corrodes the ducting and the roof around it, and the discharge does not meet the air-quality standard the plant is held to.

The equipment has to be sized to the actual gas — its properties, flow and concentration — or it will not perform, whatever the brochure says.

What CTE builds

CTE has manufactured air treatment equipment for factories and laboratories for more than ten years and, in its own words, "has established the real time data which accumulated throughout years of hands on experience, hence consistently meeting the standards of air quality discharged for the system installed." Many air-treating designs, it notes, ignore the gas properties that decide whether a system works; its own are designed from them.

Dust from the process

Answered with a dust collector and the ducting to reach it, from the same air-treating range.

The problem

Grinding, blasting, mixing, bagging or a furnace line puts particulate into the working air and out of the stack. It settles on product and machinery, it is a health and housekeeping problem on the floor, and it is a measured discharge at the boundary.

The plant needs capture at the source, ducting that survives the environment, and a collector matched to the load and the particle.

What CTE builds

Dust collectors and the ventilation and filtration systems around them, with the ducting supplied and installed. CTE lists the dust collector alongside the packed-bed scrubber as one of its four air-treating products, built to the same Department of Environment requirements. Where a process gives off both dust and fume, the collector and scrubber are engineered as one system.

Chemicals that eat steel

Answered with storage tanks and vessels in plastics, composites and combined materials, selected from the chemical, concentration and temperature.

The problem

Concentrated acid, caustic, hypochlorite or a solvent blend has to be stored or reacted, often warm. A steel tank corrodes; a lined tank fails at the seam; the wrong plastic softens at the operating temperature. The plant needs a tank whose material is chosen for the chemical it will hold, with the calculation to prove it.

What CTE builds

"From storage container, insulated tank, high temperature reaction tank, raw material storage silo, horizontal vessel to ASTM-complied reactor." CTE provides "analysis of user's requirement, detailed calculation and engineering consideration" before making the tank, and publishes the limits it works to:

Process lines that corrode

Answered with industrial piping in the material the duty calls for, and with CTE's own COTEO composite and GRP piping systems.

The problem

Treated water, chemical feed, effluent and exhaust each attack a different material. A line that was fine in carbon steel fails once the chemistry changes; a hand-laid pipe is inconsistent from length to length; corrosion products foul the pumps downstream. The plant needs the material matched to the fluid and a piping contractor who has done it before.

CTE notes the case for composite over conventional materials: lighter, easier to install and maintain, chemical resistant, rust free and lower life-cycle cost — with no coating, inhibitor, cathodic protection or corrosion allowance required.

Effluent and process water

Answered with the piping, tanks, vessels and skids of a water or wastewater treatment plant, in materials that survive the treatment chemicals.

The problem

Process water has to be made fit for purpose before use, and effluent has to be treated before discharge. Every treatment step introduces a chemical or agent, and the pipework between the stages is the first thing to corrode or degrade. The plant needs the treatment system's interconnecting piping, dosing lines, tanks and filter vessels specified for that chemistry.

What CTE builds

CTE describes water treatment as "a mandatory process to be adopted to remove contaminants in the water, or to reduce the concentration of such harmful elements so that the water is fit for the purpose" — and its own role as the piping contractor and fabricator for those systems: industrial piping for water, wastewater and chemical service, storage and reaction tanks, and installed treatment plant. Municipal water treatment plants are among the sectors it names.
